Italy is reopening to tourists from the USA and Canada!

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation announced yesterday (June 21) that:

• Covid-19 is reasonably under control.
• The new decree of the Ministry of Health allows reopening to more countries.
• International tourism can resume from Canada and the USA.

The two key points of yesterday’s announcement – which take effect immediately – are:

• Entries with Green Pass have been introduced from countries on the C-list: Canada, Japan, and the United States.
• People who have stayed or transited in the United Kingdom in the 14 days before entering Italy must undergo a Covid-19 test in the 48 hours before entering, fiduciary isolation for five days, and take a new test at the end of  isolation.

The announcement is a green light for travel, but there are certain conditions. When these conditions are met, a traveler is granted a so-called “Green Pass.”

Travelers from the USA and Canada can now enter Italy quarantine-free by meeting one of these conditions:

• A traveler is fully vaccinated (two shots when the vaccine protocol is such and 14 days after the last vaccine dose).
• A traveler has recovered from Covid-19 within the last six months (end of isolation and no symptoms).
• A traveler presents a negative test result from a test taken within 48 hours of arrival in Italy (rapid or PCR).

A self-declaration is still required, and in a sentence you declare if you have symptoms or not and if you have been knowingly in contact with people affected by Covid-19.

Mask or no mask?

Masks for outdoor use won’t be mandatory starting on June 28, when all of Italy is expected to be a "white zone." 

What happens when you go back?

As of today (June 22nd), you need a negative test prior to departure from Italy to re-enter the USA. We are confident that a sort of "green pass" to land in North America will be in place soon and that would cover the trip back. What we have found is that things are moving very quickly and that most websites – official or not – are not keeping up with the pace of the new rules. What we have also found is that airline websites are the quickest at posting any updates. Delta was on top of this most recent news and we found out about the new requirements from people flying on Delta from the USA to Italy this week before we heard about it anywhere else. The situation should continue to improve in the coming months and additional requirements could be lifted.

As far as life in Italy, it seems mostly back to normal with hotels, restaurants, and businesses open and activities bursting. And people are planning their summer vacations as well.
