La Maglia Rosa and Blockhaus
The Maglia Rosa (the Pink Jersey) is the dream of cyclists the world over. Those who have won it include outstanding champions and outsiders. On mountain stages the maglia rosa can be earned, consolidated, or lost. On stage 9, the infamous Blockhaus (the last climb and finish line after 187 km) will certainly compromise some GC ambitions and catapult some riders to be close contenders for the stage and for the final win. Keep a close eye on: Richard Carapaz of Ecuador, the winner of the 102nd edition, the expert Vincenzo Nibali, the young and fast Pidcock (UK) and Hindley (Australia).
The most recent inclusion of the Blockhaus on the Giro d'Italia was on 14 May 2017, when the stage was won by the Colombian rider Nairo Quintana, and the first use by the race was in 1967, when Eddy Merckx won the stage. Its German-sounding name goes back to the Habsburg domination of Abruzzo in the late 1800's. A "blockhaus" is a simple structure made of stones often for military use. At the top, you can still see the remains of the Blockhaus that gave its name to this peak (2.145 mt - 7,037 ft) in the beautiful Majella mountain complex.

Stage 9 - we will see riders tackle the ascent of Blockhaus. Read the Giro stage technical info:
A full mountain stage across the Apennines. The route rises early on, after the start in Isernia and heading towards Rionero Sannitico. After brushing by the iconic Macerone pass, the stage course takes in the first major climb in Roccaraso. The gradients then ease off, and the route continues mostly downhill all the way to the outskirts of Guardiagrele, before taking in the double ascent to the Blockhaus. The route climbs from Pretoro to Passo Lanciano, and then descends into Lettomanoppello. After circling the foot of the Majella, it rises towards the finish, passing through Roccamorice (as in 2017), and swirling through a series of hairpins with double‑digit gradients.
Stage 10 - we'll live the trepidation of a Giro d'Italia start in Pescara. Read the Giro stage technical info:
The stage course begins flat, following the coast, and then undulates continuously, climbing the ‘walls’ around Jesi, with no pause for breath past Civitanova Marche. The route takes in challenging climbs up to Civitanova Alta, Sant’Ignazio di Montelupone, Recanati, Filottrano, Santa Maria Nova and Monsano, with very steep stretches, which will take a slender peloton to the closing sprint in Jesi.
The Giro d’Italia stages in Abruzzo:
Stage nine, Sunday May 15: Isernia – Blockhaus 187 km - mountainsStage ten, Tuesday May 17: Pescara – Jesi 194 km hilly
