Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and roughly the size of Massachusetts, is one of Italy’s 20 regions. Located south of the Italian Peninsula and separated by the narrow Strait of Messina, Sicily boasts a distinct landscape, the most prominent feature being Mount Etna—the tallest active volcano in Europe and one of the most active worldwide, currently standing at 3,329 meters (10,922 feet). The island enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate.
Hiking on Mount Etna and the Aeolian Islands offers a unique adventure among active volcanoes, with dramatic cliffs overlooking the winding Mediterranean coastline.
Tourissimo can run a weeklong program - combining Etna and the Aeolian archipelago - designed for the casual hiker eager to explore Sicily’s rugged volcanic terrain while discovering its rich history and culture.

The Island and Volcano of Stromboli
Sicily is like a mini-continent with a captivating history shaped over thousands of years. It’s also an adventure traveler's paradise: you can hike coastal trails with turquoise sea views, wander through rolling hills of wheat and vineyards, explore rural areas with tiny farms and villages, and encounter some of Sicily's grand, imposing volcanoes up close.

Vulcano Island
Aeolian Islands
The Aeolian archipelago, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, consists of seven islands featuring smoldering craters, a rugged, rocky coastline, and two active volcanoes: Stromboli and Vulcano. We’ll visit both and take time to enjoy the black sand beaches and bubbling mud baths.

Majestic Etna
On Sicily’s mainland, we trek Mount Etna, towering at 3,350 meters. While the fittest participants can ascend to the summit, there are also several lower craters to explore. The contrast between the lava flows and vast plains of black sand near the top and the green, fertile lower slopes is striking. Etna, Europe’s highest active volcano, holds a special place in Sicilian life. Its massive presence is both reassuring and humbling, as locals understand that their fate is, in many ways, tied to "a muntagna"—the mountain.

Etna from the town of Taormina
The fertile volcanic soil, mild climate, and favorable Mediterranean winds enable exceptional agriculture, including some of Italy’s finest wines. The Etna appellation frequently ranks among the best and most up-and-coming wines. Interestingly, several expats have fallen in love with Sicily, establishing themselves as top wine producers here.
